Planning for Success

We are now on the third and last in this mini-series of posts looking at being ready for Day One in a new role or client –  so here we are on Planning

There is a saying ‘fail to plan, plan to fail’ and in my career I have found it to be a ‘truism’.

Planning for Day One of a new role is no exception and as an interim I have found it worthwhile just to sit down and concentrate on those first 30 days and then to sketch out the first 90 Days.

Some folks have said to me that they don’t know where to start but I find that experience tells us that we need to plan to meet our team, our boss, our lateral colleagues, that we need to understand deadlines, work in progress and what has gone before, what meetings you need to go to, we need to find any performance data, risks and issues as well as any thing you need to know about your people.

All this can be put into a plan before we start.

Once we are aware of the fundamentals we can start to plan in the identification of customers, stakeholders and sponsors so we can learn how to do business in our new organisation and work on our objectives.

I always set up one to ones with my team so this is a key element to my 30 day plan and rolls into the 90 day plan as weekly one to ones or team meetings – building relationships is key.
